Ohio Equity Institue for Improving Birth Outcomes
The Ohio Equity Institute for Improving Birth Outcomes was formed in response to Ohio’s staggering infant mortality rate, particularly among the African American community. Ohio currently ranks near the bottom of U.S. states in overall infant mortality with Cleveland having 2nd worst Black infant mortality rate in the Country. The group strives to assess local capacity, examine local data, design and implement an equity project, and demonstrate evidence based approach for local interventions that reduce inequities in birth outcomes.
The upstream approach for Cuyahoga County’s OEI team is to improve birth outcomes through increased participation in Centering Pregnancy. The downstream approach is to improve birth outcomes by improving access and utilization of family planning.
